partner projects

Since 2020, we have supported 3 institutions located in Watamu, on the idyllic Kenyan coast: a children's home, a primary school and a secondary school.

The children's home shelters 67 children and its founders work hard to provide the best in terms of health, education and well-being to the little ones. However, as it is a non-governmental organization, it survives on donations and sponsorship.

The schools, on the other hand, have more than 300 students and, although the teachers are extremely dedicated, both institutions have scarce resources, so social action is important to meet the complementary needs of education and maintenance of the places.

social activities

Those who identify needs are those who feel them. Karibu, in partnership with local leaders, identifies which needs can be addressed and the best ways to execute them, through social activities, aiming for consistent results.

Check below some of the activities that will be developed and the social reasons why they are important, in addition to assistance with painting, planting, harvesting, food preparation and improvements to the organizations.

Sex education for children

Reason: sexual abuse, early pregnancy, infections, school dropout, taboos.

Sex education for young people

Reason: STI, unwanted pregnancy, gender violence, abuse, myths, taboos.

Future and professions

Reason: early marriage, lack of prospects and dependencies.

Drugs and addictions

Reason: use of drugs, tobacco, alcohol and the consequences involved.

Personal

hygiene

Reason: cavities, infections, diseases, proliferation of bacteria.

First

Aid

Reason: preventable deaths and sequelae due to lack of medical support.

accomodation & logistic

The team of volunteers will be staying at the God Our Father home's founders, Sussy and Samuel. The accommodation has three simple bedrooms, each with a bathroom, bunk beds and mosquito nets over the beds. A common area for meals, refrigerator and stove (if they want to prepare their own food) is also available to volunteers.

There is no hot water in the shower, only cold water, and power outages are common. However, the accommodation is safe and spacious to welcome everyone.

sdg & coordination

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global agenda adopted by the UN in 2015, consisting of 17 objectives and 169 targets to be achieved by 2030. The project developed at the children's home and in schools in Kenya are based on SDG 4 - QUALITY EDUCATION, aiming to promote effective and relevant learning opportunities for children and young people in the region.

Aiming for excellence in the activities that will be carried out, the trip will have a coordinator responsible for guiding the mission and able to assist volunteers in whatever is necessary. Get to know a little more about her:

FAQ

1. What will this experience bring me?
Cultural immersion, teamwork, volunteer experience, contact with another way of living, social planning and the volunteer work certificate.

2. How will my performance impact the life of the project?
The activities that will be carried out in the projects will add fundamental content for their psychosocial development, aiming to continue after the volunteers leave, that is, there will be a legacy.

3. Will not speaking English be an impediment?
In no way will English be a problem, as the coordinator is able to translate everything communicated and assist with whatever is needed both in the project, at the airport or in tourist activities.

4. Will I be able to take photos promoting the project and my action?
Yes, valuing the dignity of those involved and respecting the moments to do so. An experience like this deserves to be shared!

5. Is it risky in terms of safety and illness?
No. The coordinator will be with the group at all times and is aware of the details necessary for the safety of the volunteers. Malaria is a reality in the country, but with the use of a good repellent and sleeping under mosquito nets there is no risk.

6. What are the working hours? Will there be time for tourism?
The schedule of activities will vary and may change, however there will certainly be plenty of time to stroll around and enjoy the charms of the Kenyan coast.

7. What are the accommodation conditions?
Simple. The accommodation is just a few minutes away by tuk tuk from the project. Volunteers will sleep in shared rooms with access to water (not heated) for bathing. Transport is safe and meals will be based on local cuisine.

8. Are there any requirements for registration?
The only requirement is to be of legal age. After making the payment, we will advise you on your passport, international vaccination certificate and travel insurance. You won't need to worry about anything else!
